Mommy, It's Smiling
Norla is seven. She says something grabbed her in the hallway. Adults say: you tripped. You're imagining things. Don't lie. She draws the face — that frozen, ear-to-ear smile. Twenty-three kids draw the same face. Adults say: bad influence. Clean the wall. The monster doesn't feed on blood. It feeds on disbelief. Every "it's not real" pulls it closer. Every crayon drawing tossed in the trash makes it stronger. The neighbor father scrubbed his son's art off the garage door. Now his face is locked in that smile. All across the neighborhood, adults press against windows — sightless eyes, jaws cracked wide. Only the children are left. Huddled on the school playground. Holding yarn bears and scribbled paper. Their only weapons: eyes that still see, and beliefs no one takes seriously. This is not an exorcism. This is a story about why grown-ups never see what's right in front of them. Claire finally believed her daughter. A cheap plastic bead necklace exploded with light. The monster didn't die. The adults just finally learned to shut up — and listen.
