The Man Who Owned the Cage

Gideon Rusk inherits his father's company, and with it a prison. He does not inspect it from a boardroom: he signs an observation agreement and enters Oxbow as inmate 614, because the medical ledger keeps billing for operations never performed and for men long dead. Before he reaches the books, the guard commander swaps his sealed identity file for a high-risk assessment, books him as a murder suspect and keeps the page saying he can leave. What he still has is an owner's token sewn into his sleeve. He uses it to turn the food lifts back on for a block starved as discipline, and to open a door for an old man billed for surgery he never got. A nurse hides him, sleeps with him, and hands him a transfer order whose codes are wrong; he is already out of the pod when the bullets go through it. Then in his orange jumpsuit he walks into a parole hearing, lifts the face shield and says his own name aloud. The clerk reads the register: Gideon Rusk. The photograph beside it is his dead father.
