Under the Gray Fog: The Ember Remains
Rex Calloway works festival security at Halcyon University when gray sea fog rolls ashore and the crowd begins to stand back up. He survives the night on two years of military training, a fire axe, and a voice in his skull calling itself ARBITER — a system that pays him in supply crates and a body that hardens as he clears zones. He gathers those nobody would carry: Maeve, scratched and tied to a railing until he knows she will not turn; Piper, a bartender trading warehouse routes for shelter; Malik's students, who obey only his terms. Nora Quinn, a martial arts captain who reads a killer's rhythm in his swings, becomes his partner; together they turn a besieged gym into a base, then follow a maintenance worker into a medical school where his sister has become something that still calls him brother. Beyond waits worse: a stranger who cleared their roads first, fungus that rewrites the bodies it borrows, a gray shepherd named Ember, and a radio promise of a safe zone thirty miles west.
